Welcome to Surrey Old Dogs…….. ‘the antidote to rambling groups’. Old Dogs……a walking group that’s a bit like ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ colliding with Julia Bradbury………..we wish !, or A.E.W meets ‘Grumpy Old Men’. Mix it up, throw in the grail quest for that ‘perfect country pub’, which owes considerably more to Monty Python, than Mallory’s ‘Morte d’Arthur’, and you’ll have a rough idea of what to expect.

Established in March 2009 from a group of friends from the Oxted area seeking regular exercise, fresh air and the opportunity to explore some of the outstanding countryside within a 20 mile radius, in which we are fortunate enough to reside.

There are no membership, or walking fees and participation is strictly by invitation or personal recommendation by Surrey Old Dog membership. Basically if you are on the e-mail list and buy the President a pint, you are in. Membership is not restricted to Oxted Investment Club, Oxted 41 Club or the like, and it is perfectly ok to bring along like minded friends.

It will help considerably if you have at least a passing interest in the countryside, wildlife, architecture, archaeology, local history and enjoy a pint. You will definitely need a sense of humour and the ability to both give and take ‘stick’. To all those confirmed ‘grumpies’ and really serious souls out there - ‘you would not like it’ – so this is not a club for you.

There are no rules, as such, and this is a very informal club that usually walks every Thursday morning. Details of forthcoming walks are forwarded weekly by e-mail, to which there is no need to confirm attendance, or apologise in advance, if you cannot make it. Unless you have a specific query, or want to arrange car-sharing, then just turn up at the start.

You will need to be able to walk at around 3 miles an hour with reasonable comfort, for at least 5 or 6 miles. It is not competitive, but occasionally more challenging walks of up to 10 miles are organised. You will also need the basics (walking boots, weatherproof, water bottle and a small rucksack)

We like to think we are doing our bit to support the local pubs – who currently badly need it – but we generally put into a whip for a pint or two and a sandwich, and the emphasis is very much on low cost. We also like to be as ‘green’ as we can, so car-sharing or taking the train, is the norm, whenever possible.

Members are encouraged to come up with their own suggestions for walks, but this is not mandatory.

Finally the President and Vice-President retain the right to deny continuing membership to any individual abusing membership in any way by acting in a fashion contrary to the ethos of Surrey Old Dogs, or misusing members emails for reasons other than that of a social or private nature.
